About Maastricht, capital of the province of Limburg

Maastricht in the 1980 is a bustling town of some 180,000 inhabitants. Its twice-weekly market and busy shops attract customers from Belgium and Germany and it draws numerous tourists and businessmen. The river crossing is not so important as it once was, though the existence of no less than three road bridges -in addition to the St. Servaasbrug- points to the fact that Maastricht still lies on an important line of communication. Current policies emphasise Maastricht's central location in Europe and its European image. In 1981 and 1991 the city hosted the summit meeting of the EC heads of state. The creation of the 'Euregio' area centred on the cities of Aachen, Liege and Maastricht is a further sign that Maastricht is slowly ceasing to be a city on the frontier between two powers and is returning to the central European location it occupied during the reign of Charlemagne.

Maastricht and Nijmegen are the oldest Dutch cities
